Lonesome Cowboy Dave's Greatest Hits came to be because of an ad that ran on WCSB during the ESO Radio show hosted by Chaz Smith during the mid-late 1980's. The ad boasted of the "tortured songs of America's most disturbed country song stylist" (or something like that). There were 2 to 4 second clips of Dave playing guitar and singing each song in the background as the radio announcer, Chaz (Scabby Daze) Smith rifled through the list of hits, each one sounding more and more like the lead-in to the ad proclaimed. The ad was one of the many one-take-wonders that were the soul of the Lonesome Cowboy Dave era. After a few weeks of running this "Greatest Hits" ad during the "commercial breaks" of the show, people started calling in and asking where they could get a copy of the Greatest Hits album, or if Chaz would play more of the Greatest Hits in their entirety. The challenge had been made: come up with the actual collection of Greatest Hits! The ensemble gathered at Tim Dorman's Ashtabula studio one chilly Saturday afternoon in the spring of... maybe 1988 or 1989 to record. Chaz (Scabby Daze) played synths and supplied some backing vocals, Danny (Psycopathfinder) played e-drums and also supplied a few backing vocals, and Dave (Lonesome Cowboy) played guitar and sang the lead vocals. All of this was captured and engineered by Tim Dorman at his living room home studio. The group decided that it would be extra ridiculous if the songs didn't exceed 1 minute in length. It was up to the engineer (Tim) to edit the tunes down to 1 minute or less. That never happened. They exist as they were performed...no cuts, no overdubs, no digital effects...just raw stupidity. Listen and enjoy.
